Factors affecting anesthesiologist salaries
An anesthesiologist will earn more money with more experience. In this field, salaries differ greatly depending on where a person works. Those that work in a physician’s office earn drastically more than an anesthesiologist that works in a surgical hospital. While many workers in the top 10th percentile work in a physician’s office, they may receive lower bonuses, retirement and health benefits.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the salaries of anesthesiologists broken down by sector, but much of the information is outdated. Salary.com provides up-to-date information on salaries that can be narrowed down to the city level in most cases.
Location will also play a big role in a person’s salary. As with most medical fields, bigger cities, such as Los Angeles and New York, will demand a higher salary. Cities with high demand and little workers to fill open positions, such as San Francisco, will also have higher paying salaries in general.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not provide forecasts for medical specialties, such as an anesthesiologist. Instead, the BLS provides outlooks for surgeons and physicians in general. Based off of this data, between 2012 and 2022, the industry has an expected growth rate of 18% which is higher than the national average.
Training and certification requirements for anesthesiologists
An anesthesiologist will have to undergo a significant amount of schooling before they can even enter the residency stage. As an undergraduate, these professionals will need to obtain a bachelor’s degree and meet pre-med requirements, which often include chemistry, calculus and various other courses.
Once a person meets all of the pre-med requirements, they will need to obtain their M.D. (doctor of medicine) or their D.O. (doctor of osteopath). This requires another four years of higher education. The first two years deal with basic subjects, such as anatomy. During the final two years, these professionals will go out into the field and work under a licensed physician to gain real-world experience.
During these final years, an anesthesiologist will deal with a variety of different medical specialties, not just anesthesiology.
Education does not end after a medical degree is earned. A residency and fellowship will be required after obtaining a medical degree to become a specialist in anesthesiology. Residency normally takes 4 years to complete.
Finally, after a residency is complete, an anesthesiologist may need to obtain their board certification followed by their state medical license. The American Board of Anesthesiology provides an optional board certification that requires both an oral and written exam to be passed.
Anesthesiologists can choose to specialize in pediatric anesthesiology.
These professionals are required to help patients relieve pain before, during and after surgery takes place. Other medical procedures may be required of these professionals, such as monitoring heart rates, blood pressure and the breathing of the patient.
