Factors affecting doula salaries
Just like any other field, a doula’s salary will depend on a variety of factors. From experience to location and industry, there are numerous things that will affect a doula’s annual earnings.
Experience is one major factor, and the more experience a doula has, the higher his or her salary will be.
Industry will also affect earnings. There are four primary industries that employ doulas. These include:
- Offices of Physicians
- Offices of Other Health Practitioners
- Outpatient Care Centers
- General Hospitals
Those who work in general hospitals and outpatient care centers will earn the highest salaries.
Finally, location will play a role in a doula’s yearly salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, those who work in metropolitan areas will generally earn more money than those who work in rural areas. San Jose, CA, for example, offers the highest salary, and San Diego, CA the second highest.
Training and certification requirements for doulas
Formal training is not required to become a doula, but it is recommended. A training program will provide you with a solid foundation of information. Students will learn the ins and outs of childbirth, network with other doulas and learn what the field is all about.
Certification is also available through DONA International and serves as yet another credential that will help prospective doulas get their foot in the door. Again, certification is not a requirement, but can be beneficial to doulas who are new to the field.
One important thing to note is that not all doulas are paid workers. Some work strictly as volunteers and work with parents with low incomes. These individuals offer much-needed support and assistance to families in need.
Other doulas will work independently, setting their own hours and rates. The salaries for these individuals will vary greatly.
