The Average Salary
The average salary of doula in US is $96,970.
A doula provides women with information as well as physical and emotional support before, during and after giving birth. While doulas have no clinical responsibilities, they do offer critical support and assistance to mothers who are preparing for childbirth. The Bureau of Labor Statistics places the doula profession under the “Nurse Midwives” category, but a doula’s salary may be lower in certain parts of the country.

The median salary for pediatricians is $181,048 per year, or $87 an hour. It’s important to note that the median salary is not the average salary, but rather the mid-point (or middle) salary for these medical professionals.
Like any other career, doulas who are just getting started in the field earn a salary in the lowest 10% range. Those with decades of experience will earn a salary in the top 10% range. Still, those who are just starting will earn a respectable salary of around $65,940 a year ($31.70 per hour). Those who are at the peak of their career will earn as much as $129,140 per year, or $62.09 per hour.
The middle 50% salary range for pediatricians does not take into account the top and bottom 25% of earners. When this data is removed, prospective pediatricians are left with a more accurate picture of the salary range they can expect to earn after working in the field for a year.

Factors affecting doula salaries
Just like any other field, a doula’s salary will depend on a variety of factors. From experience to location and industry, there are numerous things that will affect a doula’s annual earnings.
Experience is one major factor, and the more experience a doula has, the higher his or her salary will be.
Competition is high in this field, but demand is just as high. Entry-level pediatricians can expect to still earn a generous salary.
Those who work in general hospitals and outpatient care centers will earn the highest salaries.
Location will also play a role in a doula’s yearly salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, those who work in metropolitan areas will generally earn more money than those who work in rural areas. San Jose, CA, for example, offers the highest salary, and San Diego, CA the second highest.
Finally industry will affect earnings. There are four primary industries that employ doulas. These include:
Training and Certification Requirements
Formal training is not required to become a doula, but it is recommended. A training program will provide you with a solid foundation of information. Students will learn the ins and outs of childbirth, network with other doulas and learn what the field is all about.
Certification is also available through DONA International and serves as yet another credential that will help prospective doulas get their foot in the door. Again, certification is not a requirement, but can be beneficial to doulas who are new to the field.
One important thing to note is that not all doulas are paid workers. Some work strictly as volunteers and work with parents with low incomes. These individuals offer much-needed support and assistance to families in need.
Other doulas will work independently, setting their own hours and rates. The salaries for these individuals will vary greatly.
