Factors affecting ER doctor salaries

Unlike most fields, industry does not play a big role in the salary of an ER doctor. All doctors in this field will work in a hospital’s emergency room, which results in a less-varied salary.

Working in metropolitan areas is the biggest factor that affects the salaries of these professionals.

1. Experience

Experience does play a role in a doctor’s salary. Nearly 23% of all emergency room doctors have 2 – 5 years of experience, while 18% have 5 – 10 years of experience. Only 15% of professionals in this field have 15+ years of experience, with 26% of all ER doctors having under one year of experience.

Nearly 20% of doctors in this field have 10 – 15 years of experience.

2. Location

New York and New Jersey are two states where the salary of an ER doctor is abnormally high. Being the biggest metropolitan area in the country, an ER doctor working in New York, NY will have a very demanding schedule and be paid more money as a result. While many areas in New Jersey are more rural, it is the country’s most densely populated state, resulting in a heavy workload for an ER Doctor..

Training and Certification Requirements

An ER Doctor is a medical specialization that falls under the category of a physician. Intensive schooling is required in this field.

Graduating with a bachelor’s degree is the first step. Afterwards, a student will need to start applying for medical school.

Medical school takes 4 years to complete going full time. After medical school, obtaining the USMLE license is required. During school, a residency program will be required. Residency is a 3-year education wherein a doctor will need to go to conferences, perform lab work and work in clinical simulation environments.

Doctors that work in the field and have experience helping patients can choose to later transition into the role of an ER doctor. Additional training may be required to go from a regular physician to working in the emergency room.
